In Budget 2011, the Government of Canada committed to developing a long-term plan for public infrastructure that extends beyond the the Building Canada plan. The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, announced an engagement strategy and a steering committee to hear from subject matter experts and to develop Building for Prosperity – Canada’s Long-Term Infrastructure Plan.
The process is rolling out in three phases:
- Phase 1: Taking Stock (Fall 2011-Winter 2012)
- Phase 2: Identifying Priorities (Winter-Summer 2012)
- Phase 3: Informing the Next Agenda (Summer-Fall 2012)
Phase 2 of the steering committee’s work is currently in session, with the objective to build a long-term plan for infrastructure. As part of Phase 2, the steering committee is looking to identify key knowledge gaps and potential areas for research. The committee is co-chaired by Infrastructure Canada and the Province of Alberta, and includes senior-level representation from Engineers Canada, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Canadian Construction Association, and the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators.
